Why am I "Crunchy"? How did I get this way?

As I look back over the last few years of my life, I often wonder, “How did I become this way?” I certainly didn’t start out a “crunchy” person. Right now, I’m baby-wearing, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, and non-vaxing. How did I become this woman? I had high career aspirations, and thought my children (if I ever had them) would be cared for by a nanny while I was off pursuing my carreer goals. I was very “pro-establishment.” Then my son was born, under the care of a midwife. The love I felt for him was unlike any emotion I had ever known. I sobbed for the first few months when I went back to work. He developed terrible skin irritations and infections. He was a very sickly child. We began researching potential causes. We discovered SLS is a major reactive ingredient in almost every typical shampoo and cleanser. We eliminated those products from our home. Potientally, the formula I was feeding him might also have caused problems. I fell victim to “breastfeeding is hard, and formula is just as good,” and after a week of breastfeeding a constantly crying, hungry baby, I gave up. 3 years later, my husband and I decided we wanted another child. How could we afford it? I didn’t want to work full time anymore, and if we wanted another baby, without me working, we needed to make some changes. A friend gave me 3 boxes of cloth diapers, and I found an ebay auction of 70 assorted AIO’s and covers in various sizes. We researched how to clean and sanitize them, and jumped in with both feet into the world of cloth diapering. (to which I am currently addicted). After a picture perfect water birth, my Girlie came into the world. I had been doing more reading and researching, and became determined to breastfeed. My daughter on the other hand was not so determined. She had a weak suck, and a poor latch. With the love and support of my husband, and mother in law, and the help of a fantastic lactation consultant, we succeeded and enjoyed a 14 month nursing relationship. We co-slept. I wore her in a WAHM-made ring sling for hours at a time. For 12 of those 14 months, I was dairy and whey free for her upset tummy problems. I learned tons about alternative foods, and lost 40 pounds. Then surprise; came baby #3! During this pregnancy, I regurly saw a chiropractor, my midwife, and a massage therapist. To date, our 6 month old has had no vaccines, with no plans for them in the future. This amazing journey from career woman to crunchy mama has been a wonderfully complex metamorphosis. I guess the commerical line is true, having a baby really changes everything.

The Differnece of "Natural" and Our Natural Baby

There is a difference between natural commercial baby products and Our Natural Baby's all-natural and organic baby products. Amazingly, the term "natural" is not regulated by the FDA. This means that any company can call any product "natural," regardless of how many natural ingredients the product actually contains. Products containing only one of two naturally derived ingredients qualify to be labeled "natural." Would you consider a product made with harsh chemicals natural? No, and neither do we. So often we read the pretty labels on the front of a product and "natural" catches our eye. But, when you turn the product over and read the long list of ingredients on the back label that you can't even pronounce, you shocked and astonished as to what is actually in that "natural" product.

BUT TAKE A MOMENT TO READ THE BACK OF OUR LABELS...

and you will be in for a wonderful surprise! In front of you is listed a range of natural ingredients, including exotic moisturizing butters and skin-nourishing oils. We utilize certified organic products whenever possible. Our essential oils are 100% Pure Therapeutic Quality. ONB promises full ingredient discolsure. If we don't list it, it's not there. The only synthetic ingredient we use in any of our products is a mild preservative, Liquid Germall® Plus or Optiphen™ ND. These preservatives are only used in water based products, and we are committed to clearly indicating this preservative's use. Products containing water require a preservative because the water content can lead to contamination. Currently, we are re-formulation our Baby Bum Foam and Cloth Diaper Rinse for preservative inclusion. We are continually working to expand our product line to include other baby care products. As always, should the need arise to utilize a preservative, we promise to fully-inform you.

THINK YOUR PRODUCTS ARE UNSCENTED and SAFE FOR SENSITIVE SKIN?

Once again, commercial manufacturers of sensitive skin "fragrance free" products are misleading you. Some unscented products actually have a masking scent added to them to cover up or eliminate any natural aroma that the product may actually possess. The final product you smell will actually not have any scent, but can still contain fragrance. The ingredients label tells the truth. Be assured, when one of our products is labeled "unscented" it has absolutely no additional essential fragrance oil added to it. It may have the natural smell of the actual ingredients used, but it will never have an added fragrance.

It is necessary explain the difference between our fragrances, and fragrances used in commercial baby products. There are two different ways to fragrance products. Essential Oils are derived from natural plants, thus making them 100% natural as well. The other type of fragrances are synthetic fragrance oils. Because these are synthetic, meaning that the fragrance itself is not a natural ingredient. Our Natural Baby utilizes ONLY essential oils are 100% Pure Therapeutic Quality. We will not utilize synthetic fragrance oil blends in our products.

Disposable diapers and wipes contain numerous ingredients that can cause skin irritations. Turns out what you don’t know may be causing problems for your baby’s sensitive skin.

As an example we compare two baby wipe products; Pampers® Baby Wipes with Aloe and Lavender™, and Our Natural Baby’s® Bum Foam™.

Pampers ® Baby Wipes with Aloe and Lavender™:Water, Dimethicone, Aloe Vera Gel, Sodium Acrylates/Vinyl Isodecanoate Crosspolymer, Polysorbate 20, Phenycarbinol, Disodium EDTA, Sodium-Hydroxy-Methylglycinate, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbonate, Lavender Fragrance.

Our Natural Baby’s® Bum Foam™:Distilled Water, 100% Pure Vegetable Glycerine, 100% Pure Hemp Almond Liquid Castile Soap, Organic Sunflower Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Organic Sweet Almond Oil, Vitamin E, 100% Pure Lavender, Organic Sweet Orange, Organic Calendula, 100% Pure Australian Tea Tree, Blue Chamomile Essential Oil.

Commercial Baby wipes are disposable cloths used to cleanse the diaper area of infants and toddlers. These cloths are made from non-woven fabrics similar to those used in dryer sheets and are saturated with a synthetic solution of cleansing ingredients. Baby wipes are typically sold in plastic tubs that keep the cloths moist and allow for easy dispensing.

Our Natural Baby’s Bum Foam is a naturally pure foaming wipe solution designed to be used with non-disposable cloth wipes.

Water is the main ingredient in commercial baby wipes and serves as a carrier and diluent for the other ingredients. Disposable wipes also contain synthetic detergents mixed with other chemicals, artificial fragrance, and preservatives. The detergents most commonly used are known as amphoteric surfactants, similar to those found in baby shampoos. Sodium diamphoacetate and coco phosphatidyl PG-dimonium chloride are primary surfactants used in wipes. Humectants such as propylene glycol and glycerine are added to prevent premature drying of the solution In addition, some formulas incorporate oils such as mineral oil, lanolin, or silicones. Thickeners, such as cellulose derivatives like hydroxymethyl cellulose, control the viscosity of the finished product and keep it the right consistency. Other ingredients include preservatives, such as methyl and propyl paraben. Synthetic fragrance is usually added to increase consumer appeal and to help over-come body odors, but fragrance-free products are also offered.

So, what’s the difference?

According to Aubrey Hampton, of Aubrey Organics®, the difference is that many synthetic ingredients are harmful, hazardous, toxic chemicals. For example, amphoteric surfactants are inexpensive synthetic detergent used in products from shampoos, body wash, bubble baths, and laundry detergent for its foam-building abilities, which imitates more expensive products. It can cause, skin rashes and allergic reactions. It is frequently disguised in pseudo-natural products with the added explanation "comes from coconut". Jessica Iclisoy, developer of California Baby®, comments, “Little girls get yeast and bladder infections that they have to fight with for the rest of their lives because of synthetic cleansing agents”. Petroleum based ingredients are also harmful as well. Petrochemicals such as petroleum jelly and mineral oil cause problems with the skin’s photosensitivity (i.e., promotes sun damage), and tends to interfere with the body's own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dry skin and chapping. You are being sold a product that can create the very conditions it claims to alleviate. Manufacturers use petrolatum because it is unbelievably cheap. The synthetic fragrances used in skin care products can have as many as 200 ingredients. There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the label it will simply say "Fragrance." Some of the problems caused by these chemicals are headaches, dizziness, rash, eczema, hyperpigmentation, and violent coughing.

The best way to avoid these ingredients is to purchase naturally based products that give full ingredient disclosure. You may find that your baby’s skin irritations will suddenly disappear when you no longer use skin care products formulated with petrochemicals and other synthetics. In fact, the best way to treat your baby’s itchy red patches or diaper rash is to switch to more natural alternatives.

So, what should I look for in a natural care product?

First, look for high quality ingredients that are food or vitamin grade, natural, hypoallergenic and biodegradable, such as castile soap and pure vegetable glycerin. These ingredients are effective, gentle, cleaners with no reported adverse effects. Secondly, the manufactures should use certified organic herbs. Finally, fragrances should be pure, aromatherapy quality essential oil infusions.

Some who come across this kind of information feel unmotivated to act upon it. They may feel that if we have survived so far with the presence of these chemicals, which our government allows, then there is no need for such a fuss. Very simply, the difference is that synthetic chemicals and fragrances create skin irritations and allergic reactions while natural products and essential oils are non-stripping to the skin and promote wellness.

Because of a personal experience with severe diaper dash in my daughter; I was motivated to investigate natural options that didn’t aggravate her condition. We chose to cloth diaper, utilize luxuriously plush sherpa cloth wipes, and we formulated a natural foaming wipe solution which has solved her rash problems.

Thanks to Erin who sent out the invitation to perfhttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.giform an interview! I responded, so here it is! Thanks a bunch Erin.

1. What inspired you to start Our Natural Baby? Actually, several things. Our son as a baby had extremely severe eczema. He actually had a staph infection at one point. Then we discovered the California Baby Super Sensitive products, and he has only had a few flare ups since. Since his birth, we have become very aware of the harmful chemicals and additives in typical baby products like skin care and diapers. Then our daughter was born, in April 2004. We made some huge changes in using cloth diapers, and more natural skin care products. There is so little selection in this area for natural and holistic products, that my husband and I decided we could fill the void with ONB.

2. You are in school. What are you studying and why? I just finished college through Union Institute & University I am completed my BA in psychology. I loved my psychology courses at the community college level, and decided I wanted to continue in that area as I continued my studies. My official graduation date was September 24th. I'm hoping to apply to graduate school next spring. My family jokes that I'm going to be a professional student. Maybe that's true. I love learning.

3. How do your own children inspire you in your work and studies? My children inspire me to get up every morning to provide them with a full and happy life. They push me to better myself so that I can do better for them. I love having their little arms wrapped around my legs in a huge hug.

4. If you could travel, with or without your kids, any where in the world, at no cost, where would you go? Why? I'd like to take a cruise all around the world. Stopping in Europe, Asia, the Caribbean. I loves cruises. You only have to unpack once, and you can stop at dozens of different places. You have a personal steward, and you never have to pay for a meal! :) We took a cruise on our honeymoon, and I vowed I'd never travel any other way.

5. It's 2020, where do you live? What are you doing? What are your children doing? Ugh, that would put me celebrating an anniversary of my 39th birthday! :) Well... Jackson will be 20, and Caitlin 16. I'd love to see ONB take off and become a franchise or national chain. Jackson hopefully will be entering his Jr. Year in college, and Caitie would be an incoming Jr. in High School. I might be a lawyer, or maybe the CEO of ONB (maybe both). Jason wants to earn his Master's in Economics and be a college prof or working as analyst for a corporation. So, probably we'll live on a coast or in D.C. I'd like a HUGE Georgian Colonial, and cleaning people so I don't have to take care of it! :) My mother always said, "Big dreams don't cost anymore than little dreams." I dream big.
